MY LANDSCAPES PART 4

March 24th, 2008 Sid

“Learning from the Great Master’s is perhaps one of the best possible ways to learn something. This, I suppose, is valid for any form of trade imaginable. Be it painting, sculpting, gardening, carpentry, anyone learning any trade from the Greats, picks up in the least some things which otherwise he/she would never get to learn. But, however much s/he studies the Masters, practice is the single most important thing which can truly make him/her great”.

This was said to me by my tuition teacher almost a decade ago. Though these are not his exact words, but he meant something like that. Moreover, he said that in some other context not even distantly related to arts or culture. But, I think what he said that day, was, is and will always remain the core of my success in everything in life.

As long as remember, I have always looked at the colorful Drawing and Painting books, and have wanted to draw all the works which appealed to me. When in sixth or seventh grade my father bought me the Student’s Oil Painting set, I was so elated that within the first 3-4 days, I copied around 4-5 paintings. Though the enthusiasm soon died out, those few paintings taught me more than anyone ever did in art school.

I am presenting here one such copy of mine. Though this painting by Van-Gough is originally titled “Bridge at Arles”, I renamed it “The Draw Bridge”. I also did some modifications to the original composition, such as removing the washer-women and adding some foliage out of nowhere.
