My Illustrations : The Countdown Clock to Graduation

March 31st, 2008 Sid Comments off

A couple of weeks ago, while thinking about my university days and the time left for us to graduate, I subconsciously drew a sketch of a “living-clock”. When I realized what had happened, I decided to tinker with Illustrator and create something with the idea. This is what I did with the pen tool of the program.

Final Preparation for Shristi 2008

March 31st, 2008 Sid Comments off

As I have already mentioned, Shristi our technical festival is going to start in a couple of days. Its a three day technical extravaganza for the nerds, of the nerds and by the nerds. . . Being a member of the organizing batch, the work load for us in these final days is huge. I have continuously bunked classes for the past week or so and there is no hope of me attending any classes in the coming week. I dare to see the attendance registers. I pray they don’t hand me a FA (Failed due to attendance) grade this semester.

The most frustrating part is the misunderstanding that creeps in between the members of the organizing batch. Though there is always somebody to control the situation, the loss of time and effort is never justified. Add to that the arrogant attitudes of some of the teachers, and the situations worsens.
Anyway, till now the going is great and we hope to conclude the show in the grandest of fashion.

PS: Today, I will make the final presentation in Flash and my work will be finished for the time being. Thanks Mayur and Kaushik for your cooperation.

FAREWELL NERIST

March 29th, 2008 Sid Comments off

Today was our Farewell party. Today for the first time I am feeling the end of the beautiful journey that was NERIST. After exactly 48 days we will cease to be NERIST-ians. Rather we would become ex-NERIST-ians. But whatever I do in my life or wherever I go, the NERIST tag will always be there with me. This is something that will remain with me till the day I die. Earlier when I first came to NERIST, the tight schedule, the awkward dinner hours, the loneliness, the hills, the cold, the teachers, the seniors, the ragging, everything used to creep me out. I hated this place and the people surrounding me. But as time passed I made new friends, the friends who light my everyday life, the friends who care for me, who guide me. So far we have faced everything that NERIST could throw at us together. Be it the diploma project disaster, or the lengthy and boring lectures, or the dreaded MA 5101, we have endured every storm together and lived to tell the story. But now, after the end-semester exams end, it’s every man for himself. There will no longer be any friends to guide you, no one will be there to wake you up in the morning, no special comments, no expert advices on matters ranging from the sucking bottle at VISHAL’s to distant crushes, no more birthday parties, no more treats, and finally no more GenX talk. Man, Life’s going to suck. . . But that, I suppose is how life works.

Bikash, Manish, Mayur, Moumita, Puja and Rahul

I am going to miss you guys.

BEST OF LUCK FOR LIFE.

MY LANDSCAPES PART 4

March 24th, 2008 Sid Comments off

“Learning from the Great Master’s is perhaps one of the best possible ways to learn something. This, I suppose, is valid for any form of trade imaginable. Be it painting, sculpting, gardening, carpentry, anyone learning any trade from the Greats, picks up in the least some things which otherwise he/she would never get to learn. But, however much s/he studies the Masters, practice is the single most important thing which can truly make him/her great”.

This was said to me by my tuition teacher almost a decade ago. Though these are not his exact words, but he meant something like that. Moreover, he said that in some other context not even distantly related to arts or culture. But, I think what he said that day, was, is and will always remain the core of my success in everything in life.

As long as remember, I have always looked at the colorful Drawing and Painting books, and have wanted to draw all the works which appealed to me. When in sixth or seventh grade my father bought me the Student’s Oil Painting set, I was so elated that within the first 3-4 days, I copied around 4-5 paintings. Though the enthusiasm soon died out, those few paintings taught me more than anyone ever did in art school.

I am presenting here one such copy of mine. Though this painting by Van-Gough is originally titled “Bridge at Arles”, I renamed it “The Draw Bridge”. I also did some modifications to the original composition, such as removing the washer-women and adding some foliage out of nowhere.

M. F. Hussain's Record

March 22nd, 2008 Sid Comments off

India has over the years produces many notable artists like Raja Ravi Verma, Tyab Mehta, Amrita Shar-Gil, Francis Newton Souza, Ganesh Pyne, A.Ramachandran, C.Raja Raja Varma, Anjolie Ela Menon. But the one name which stands out above all is that of M.F.Hussain. He is perhaps the most successful and most controversial of all the Indian artists till date and a proof of his success is the record breaking price that his 1971 painting “Battle of Ganga and Jamuna: Mahabharata 12″ has fetched at the Christie’s South Asian Modern and Contemporary Art sale in New York recently.

Battle of Ganga and Jamuna: Mahabharata 12

The Painting sold for a cool $1.6 million to set the world record for the highest priced Indian Art. His list of achievements goes on and on. He has been awarded the prestigious Padma Shree in 1955, the Padma Bhushan in 1973 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1991, by the Government of India. He was also specially invited at the “Sao Paulo Biennial” in 1971 to exhibit alongside Pablo Picasso.

Hussain’s “Self-Karachi” and “Horse”

In spite of all his successes, M.F Hussain has always been a controversial figure in the Indian art scene. He has been accused by the Hindu hardliners of hurting their religious sentiments. The situation was further aggravated by his depiction of India as a nude goddess. In 2006, he publicly apologized for the incident and offered to take the painting out of the auction house. Most recently during the Christie’s auction, the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) protested against Hussain for hurting their sentiments by painting Hindu gods and goddesses in a derogatory and vulgar form.

Ganga Jamuna: The Controversial Painting

Now, the question arises, should the artists be free to express whatever they want in the name of creativity, or should they refrain from hurting the sentiments of the masses? The cartoon incident concerning the Muslim community was an example of how far the sentiments could be hurt. One similar incident happened in Gujarat’s MS University when an art student was jailed for depicting Hindu goddesses in vulgar poses. There are numerous incidents of similar nature where the creativity has interfered with the sensitivity.

The answer to the above question is not a straight forward one. Especially in a country like India which is so highly heterogeneous, this question takes on a completely different meaning. India is a secular and democratic country where every individual has the right to express whatever he/she wants to. But, even a sixth grader will tell you that along with the fundamental rights there are the fundamental duties. We as citizens don’t want our rights to be taken away, but also we should be aware of our duties. We should also be tolerant of what others express and say. There should always be a fine line between the duties and the rights. M F Hussain has every right to draw what he wants to. But repeating the same theme (nudity), when he knows that it hurts the sentiments of a particular group again and again, reflects the lack of commitment to the fundamental duties on his part. The Hindu Organisations should also refrain from blowing the matter out of proportion every time Hussain exhibits or auctions something. They should learn to filter out the things which they do not like. Hussain’s paintings are his personal thoughts and views, which he expects nobody to believe in or follow. They should learn to view art as art only and not as any propaganda statement.

Finally, I would like to mention that ultimately in this battle of sentiments, rights, duties and protests, the primary looser is the artist and the arts. Let us be patient and tolerant and let the arts and culture flourish.

My Landscapes 3

March 20th, 2008 Sid Comments off

Continuing on the Landscape series, I want to present this oil-painting I made. It is the copy of an old Van-Gogh I found in the Great Artists series.

One interesting thing about the great man was that he was active as a professional full time painter only for the last 10 years of his life. During this time he produced more than 900 paintings and 1000 other works. Another thing that stuck me was that he became mentally unstable during the later years of his life, but in spite of that he produced some of his best works during this period. He perhaps was the best known impressionist painter ever, and his works like the ones shown below are perhaps the most famous impressionist paintings ever.

The Starry Night, June 1889 (The Museum of Modern Art, New York.)Self-Portrait 1887
Vase with Twelve Sunflowers, August 1888 (Neue Pinakothek, Munich).
This great artist committed suicide at the age of 37 after a brief period of mental illness. His achievements remain unrivaled even today.

My Landscapes 2

March 20th, 2008 Sid Comments off

This is the second post in the “My Landscape” series. Here I would like to display a mixed media painting I made for a local art competition a couple of years ago. The original Photo was from a book titled, “Himachal Pradesh” which is a photo-book about the Himalayan state from northern India. My father picked it up from a second hand book store in New Delhi’s Connaught place for a mere Rs.150 ($3). When you compare it with the original price of the book which was around Rs.1500 ($30), it a damn good deal. That book was solely responsible for generating my interest in landscapes and photography. I don’t remember the photographer and the author, but they together did a splendid job in capturing the enchanting beauty of the middle Himalayan range.

My Landscapes

I love painting portraits. . .But, sometimes monotonous work bores you. So, I have decided to stop portraits for sometimes and concentrate on other forms of painting. To begin with, I created a landscape study from the Great Artist Magazine. I have used watercolor to do this study and it has been done in simple A4 size watercolor paper. I don’t like the way the sky has been rendered here, but for this study this will do. I always think about painting outdoors, but due to some reason or other, I am unable to do that. Moreover, due to the Final Semester project, I don’t get much time now-a-days. Back in school days, when I used to attend Drawing school, we had one outdoor class per week. We used to visit places near Tezpur and capture them on our canvases. I miss those days. . .

After finishing my graduation, I will have two months time before joining the job. I am planning to utilize the time by traveling, photographing and painting.

Flag Code of Conduct

March 17th, 2008 Sid Comments off

In my previous post I said something about India and the disparity in the Indian society. The image you see now is not the original one I posted. The original one was a photoshop illustration I made to go with the post.
I agree with the comment posted on the previous post. The image was really offensive. When I initially made it, I never realised that a work of art can be viewed like that. I never intended to offend the Indian Flag or any such emblem in any way. That was just my way of expressing how I feel about the path India is heading on.
You can read more about the Flag Code of India here.

Anyways if anybody is hurt due to my actions, I am deeply sorry for that.
